Parent & Toddler Groups
Parent & Toddler sessions are valuable for both parents and children. Parents come along for the company of others, to chat and just to get out of the house for a few hours. Parents also come to give their children an opportunity to play and mingle with other children. This is especially important for parents from isolated areas. There are 19 Parent & Toddler groups in Kerry: ˇAn Gleann ˇAnnascaul ˇBallyspillane, Killarney ˇBeaufort ˇCaherciveen ˇCaherdaniel ˇCastlemaine ˇDromid ˇGlenbeigh ˇGlencar ˇGlenflesk ˇIsogáin, Park Road, Killarney ˇKenmare ˇKilcummin ˇKillorglin ˇMilltown/Listry ˇLauragh ˇMethodist Church, Killarney ˇSt. Finian’s Bay The groups meet weekly and some meet twice weekly.
Each group has its own committee & bank account.
There is a South Kerry Parent & Toddler Support Network. This provides a focal point for Parent & Toddler groups where they can maintain contact and share information. The current chairperson is Ann Daly, Killorglin Parent & Toddler Group. This Network consists of representatives of each Parent & Toddler group in South Kerry and has an elected Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer.
Each Parent & Toddler group has a Parent & Toddler Support Pack as a resource for practical information and guidance on the day-to-day running of an efficient, safe and enjoyable Parent & Toddler group. Information booklets and leaflets, of relevant to parents of young children, are also distributed on a regular basis to groups, e.g., “Choosing a Childminder”, “Red Cross Babysitting Handbook” etc. Training has also been provided on Arts & Crafts activities through the Network and guest speakers come in from time to time.
Most of the groups have now participated in either the Learn through Play with your Infant programme or the Language and Play programme.
